The Pittsburgh Steelers lost a key member of their franchise on Monday when the legal tampering period opened.

Cornerback Cam Sutton reportedly agreed to a three-year deal with the Detroit Lions, ending his run in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers selected the former Tennessee Vols standout in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Sutton developed into an essential starter for Pittsburgh and was a player that many fans expected back in 2023.

Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, Sutton's value reached a level that the Steelers weren't comfortable with.

With Sutton off to Detroit, the Steelers are signing cornerback Patrick Peterson, a potential future Hall of Famer, to a two-year deal.

Peterson is nearing the end of his career, but he's still a productive player who will fit well in Pittsburgh's culture.

After the news of Sutton's departure broke, two Steelers team leaders took to social media to send a message to their former teammate.

Quarterback Kenny Pickett and pass rusher TJ Watt both took to Instagram to send farewell messages to Sutton.

Pickett wrote that Sutton is a "hell of a player and an even better person". Watt shared a similar sentiment, writing "Hell of a player and teammate! Going to miss sharing the field with you".

Sutton was a great player for the Steelers and he'll certainly be missed. But thanks to the NFL salary cap, tough decisions like this one have to be made at times.
