As the deadline to have the 53-man roster approaches, the Pittsburgh Steelers remain in the spotlight as they have a very attractive trade candidate on the team. After all, not every team in the league has a group of three quarterbacks like they do.
It's difficult to find a quality backup quarterback in the NFL and with Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett establishing themselves as the top two guys on the depth chart, Mason Rudolph has emerged as a likely trade candidate.
Especially after Rudolph's strong offseason, the Steelers have a player that could earn them decent compensation. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the phone has been ringing and they have been entertaining the possibility.
"My understanding is there is some interest around the league about a potential trade of Mason Rudolph," said Ian Rapoport on NFL Network. "Sounds like the Pittsburgh Steelers would listen at the right price."
Keep in mind, that Rudolph's work this summer had some reporters like The Athletic's Mark Kaboly thinking he was worthy of being the starter.
Although far from an ideal alternative as QB1, the Steelers' current third-string signal-caller remains one of the best backups in the league. Teams with shaky situations at the position – like the Detroit Lions or the Houston Texans – could benefit tremendously from his services.
The quarterback market also features Jimmy Garoppolo, who's definitely a better quarterback. Given his contract, however, getting him is not as straightforward. We'll see which domino falls first as next Tuesday's deadline gets closer and closer.
If the compensation is fair enough, moving on from the former Oklahoma State Cowboy is a no-brainer for Pittsburgh. Mitch Trubisky appears to be the guy they're starting and suiting up as QB2 will be the ideal way to develop Kenny Pickett as a rookie.
