The Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting to find their next head coach. They have interviewed several candidates virtually, and as of this week, two formal interviews have been conducted with Brian Flores (who is likely headed back to Minnesota) and Mike McCarthy, who has familiarity not only with the city of Pittsburgh as a native, but of course, Aaron Rodgers.

What about the other candidates though? Well, ESPN spoke to people around the league and if there is a hold up, it could be due to Steelers owner Art Rooney.

NFL raises concerns about Steelers owner Art Rooney

If you are named head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, you know above all else, that you will be given perhaps the longest leash in the league. The stability of the franchise, along with the lore of the city makes the job one of the most appealing in the league.

However, some have raised concerns about the future of the franchise and if Art Rooney is doing everything possible to win.

“It’s better than most, jobwise, They need to bump up salaries,” a source told Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “Coaches will value the stability and ownership patience, but I think the organization has truly fallen behind in the NFL in terms of a modern operation.”

Ownership issues not new to Pittsburgh

This isn’t the first time we have heard of questions about the Steelers as a franchise. The NFL’s Player Association releases an annual survey and players within the organization have stressed concerns over the facilities and the overall ownership in the past.

As the article from ESPN suggested, the Steelers have been one of the teams less inclined to paying their coaching staff. They have always believed that it starts and ends with the head coach and in fairness to Mike Tomlin, his staff’s have never featured some up and coming candidates like other teams.

I still firmly believe that the Steelers will land any candidate they desire, but it doesn’t come without concerns.
