Gentry was released by the Steelers as a part of the final roster cuts, but is remaining in the AFC North.
The 6-foot-8, 265 pound tight end began his college career at Michigan as a quarterback, but was switched to his current position during his freshman season.
And it clearly worked out, with the Steelers drafting Gentry in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The pick used to select Gentry was one that was included in the trade that sent Antonio Brown from Pittsburgh to the Las Vegas Raiders (formerly Oakland).
In his rookie season, he had one reception for four yards in four games played before being placed on injured reserve due to a knee sprain in Week 11.
During the 2021 and 2022 season, Gentry played in every game, finishing his career in Pittsburgh with 39 receptions for 303 yards.
Gentry's release from the Steelers came as a surprise, as he was viewed as a lock for the roster. However, Pittsburgh went with Darnell Washington as the third-string tight end behind Pat Freiermuth and Connor Heyward on the depth chart.
And they opted to not sign him to the practice squad, instead signing Rodney Williams who spent a lot of the 2022 season on the Steelers practice squad.
Gentry will get a new opportunity to prove himself in a strong organization.
