Cam Heyward’s future with the Pittsburgh Steelers just became a lot clearer following a major adjustment to his current contract
The Steelers have made a big move that says a lot about Heyward’s future in Pittsburgh.
While the Pittsburgh Steelers front office is firmly entrenched in building the best 2026 roster amid NFL free agency, it’s never too soon to plan for the future. The Steelers came into free agency with around $50 million in cap space. After a series of trades and extensions, that figure sat at $14 million on Tuesday night.
Then came the news that Cam Heyward’s contract has been revised. Not only does it create more cap space for the Steelers to operate with going forward, but perhaps more importantly, it speaks to Heyward’s future in Pittsburgh.
Cam Heyward receives another year on his contract
“The Steelers have added a year to DE Cam Heyward’s contract, creating nearly $5.5 million in cap space. His new deal is worth $32.25 million over two years with the first year guaranteed.” – Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (via Twitter-X)
Before the added year, Heyward was set to play on an expiring contract in 2026. Remember, for the past two offseasons, Heyward and the Steelers brass have gone back and forth about new deals. He received a slight revision in 2024, went on to have an All-Pro year, and asked for the same thing again in 2025, to which the Steelers responded with a sweetener just days before the season started.
Now, by adding another year to his deal, that means the team ties Heyward to Pittsburgh through 2027. He had a $19 million cap hit and a March 12 roster bonus under his old deal, so the extra year will drop that cap charge and give the Steelers close to $20 million remaining in cap space.
Does Cam Heyward’s contract revision signal a big move on the horizon?
We know that Patrick Queen’s name has been floated in trade discussions, and the Steelers still have holes to fill at safety, WR No.3, and left guard. Adding another $5.5 million in operating capital could be the catalyst for another trade at one of those positions of need, or it could just be the Steelers securing Heyward’s future for another year, with the savings simply being an effect of that cause.
Time will tell us soon enough.
