The Pittsburgh Steelers have made two things crystal clear this offseason:
Broderick Jones (last year's first-round pick) has to get back to his natural position at LT, and the team wants to play through the run.
So with less than a month to go, one prospect stands above the rest as the Steelers' round one draft target:
The Steelers should draft Georgia OT Amarius Mims with their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft
Mims is going to go in the top 20 picks. That much is a given. Sure he hasn't played a ton and is a little raw with some slight durability concerns, but you don't find offensive tackles with the athleticism and upside that he has in his body:
Unbelievable athlete. Looks like he was built in a lab. Has natural power. Knee bend and foot quickness are great for his size. Tape was phenomenal against Ohio State in the playoff as a sophomore. If he stayed healthy this season he would have put himself in the top 10 conversation. Upside is higher than Alt and Fashanu. Getting a discount because of lack of playing time, but experience is big for offensive tackles. -Anonymous Scout
Why Draft Another Georgia OT?
This may feel like Deja Vu, but there is a real chance that the Steelers are once again trading up in the first round for an offensive tackle from Georgia.
But that's for good reason.
Jones and Mims would form a tackle tandem that could be among the best in the league. Young, athletic, and smart, the two could play well into their 30s together and be the foundation of the Steelers' offense for years to come with the right coaching and maturation.
Final Word
Mims checks all the boxes for the Steelers draft process. He allows Broderick Jones to get back to left tackle, fills a pressing need, and is exactly Pittsburgh's type given his profile of tools and pedigree.
In an ideal world, Pittsburgh stays put at 20 and grabs Mims, but there are plenty of teams in front of them that have needs at tackle as well. That could mean another trade-up in round one, and another exciting night in a little over three weeks.
