With Ben Roethlisberger retiring, it's logical to think the Steelers want to find another capable signal-caller as quick as possible.
They took one step toward attempting to do just that on Monday. Per NFL Network's Mike Garofolo, the Steelers are planning to sign Mitchell Trubisky, who was the Chicago Bears' No. 2 overall draft pick in 2017. Per Garafolo, it's a two-year deal for Trubisky, but terms have not been disclosed, yet.
The Steelers were reportedly in the hunt for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but the signing of Trubisky means the Steelers don't have to give up any assets in an attempt to get "their guy".
Trubisky brings a lot to the table, even if he is considered a bust at this point in his career. He has a good arm, good mobility, and good overall athleticism. Playing under Matt Nagy will hurt any quarterback's chances at having a quality career. Trubisky's traits alone are worthy of giving him another shot to show what he can do.
It's unclear as to whether or not Trubisky is the starter from the get-go. Mason Rudolph is on the roster and while Rudolph is not considered a starting quarterback by any means, the coaching staff knows him and he knows the offense. That gives Rudolph the slightest of head starts, but Trubisky should be able to catch up and pass him pretty quickly.
Either way, the Steelers have an option at the most important position in the game after the decision to sign Trubisky. And for now, that's considered progress.
