The Pittsburgh Steelers are a little over two weeks away from the start of the NFL Draft, with rumors that wide receiver is a possibility with one of their top 50 selections.
But after the latest news, that may not come to fruition anymore, with the Steelers having traded for wide receiver Allen Robinson from the Los Angeles Rams.
Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, the Steelers will be trading for Robinson pending his physical.
Robinson was a Pro Bowler in 2015 with the Jaguars, before a stint in Chicago and most recently in Los Angeles.
Never playing with a considerable quarterback until he joined the Rams, Robinson was wildly viewed as one of the more underrated receivers in the NFL.
But in 10 games last season, Robinson only caught 33 passes for 339 yards and three scores, never getting on the same page with Matthew Stafford and integrating into Ram's offense.
Now, before everyone completely over-reacts, the trade compensation is likely to be minimal but we will await the final details once the results of the physical are known.
The main concern is that the Steelers just traded for a hefty contract, one that includes a $15 million dollar guaranteed salary in 2023.
But something tells me the Steelers and Robinson are on the same page when it comes to lowering his cap hit, otherwise, this trade will go down as one of the worst in franchise history.
So, if all they gave up was a day three pick, and can re-negotiate his contract the Steelers are still getting a proven veteran that is on the right side of 30.
Robinson does offer inside-outside versatility and has been one of the league's better receivers when healthy, even if that was some time ago following his rocky end in Chicago and now Los Angeles.
I understand that the clip is from two years ago, but let's stop and breathe for a minute.
Which franchise is noted for being the best when it comes to drafting and developing wide receivers?
Oh right, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
And I know people will point to free-agent misses at wide receiver like Donte Moncrief, but we can do that with every franchise and multiple positions.
The point is, let's give the front office the benefit of the doubt before we lose it.
Once the compensation is released, and the play on the field commences, this trade may have Steelers fans singing a different tune come the fall.
