We are firmly in the midst of the busiest week of the year for many NFL teams. 

Fresh off making waves in free agency by signing one Pro Bowler and trading another, the Pittsburgh Steelers have shifted their focus (for the morning at least) to the NFL Draft:

Steelers Staff in Full Force At Georgia Pro Day

The two Schools that Pittsburgh is most interested in during the draft cycle are typically Wisconsin and Georgia. With multiple alumni from both schools making up a good portion of the roster, this year’s Pro Day at the University of Georgia called for an all hands on deck sort of scenario when considering the amount of prospects:

OT Amarius Mims 

Offensive tackle Amarius Mims is the Steelers number one priority, as pairing him with last year’s first-round pick and fellow Bulldog, Broderick Jones would give Pittsburgh their tackle duo for the next decade plus. 

Mims isn’t as polished as some of the other tackles in the class, but as one source told me, “he’s a freak, like built-in-a-lab, kind of freak.” A little bit of rawness never stopped the Steelers from picking someone they liked in the past, and I doubt it will now. 

WR Ladd McConkey 

McConkey is a buttery smooth athlete that also happened to turn heads at the Combine with superior athletic testing. With the pedigree of a champion and the athleticism and ball skills to dominate over the middle of the field, McConkey can contribute from day one as a slot WR. 

I even asked McConkey about potentially joining a Steelers team that includes so many of his former teammates while at the Senior Bowl, to which he said, “I would love to play for any team, but having guys like George, [Pickens) Brod, [Broderick Jones] and Darnell [Washington] there would be pretty sweet.”

S Javon Bullard

Bullard is one of my favorite safeties in this class thanks to his versatility. Other than pure man coverage, there are few holes in his game. He would be the perfect chess piece to place next to Minkah Fitzpatrick, and he could potentially go as late as round three. 

And with Pittsburgh playing coy in the free-agent safety market, perhaps they will wait to the draft to address the position, making Bullard an excellent proposition. 

C Sedric Van Pran 

Another position the Steelers have yet to address in free agency is center. With literally none on the roster right now, it’s not a question of if the Steelers will acquire one via the draft or free agency, but when. 

Van Pran doesn’t have the skill set that a Jackson Powers Johnson from Oregon does, but he also won’t cost the draft capital that JPJ will, with Van Pran slated to be closer to the mid-rounds and JPJ basically a lock for round one. 

Final Word

Few events on the Pro Day circuit will bring out this large of a teams staff, but when you have roots tied to a program, and they have some great players at positions of need, you better believe the Pittsburgh Steelers will be there.
