Mitch Trubsiky was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers this week with the expectation that he'll be the team's starting quarterback in 2022.
There's no guarantee, however, that Trubisky will win the job. Pittsburgh is going to have an open competition this summer between Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, and Dwayne Haskins.
It's a competition that Trubisky welcomes.
"You expect competition, and I'm looking forward to earning the spot and earning the trust of my teammates," said Trubisky on Thursday during his introductory press conference.
Regardless of whether or not Trubisky wins the job and has a great career with the Steelers, the city of Pittsburgh will always be special to the former North Carolina quarterback.
That's because Trubisky's son will be born in Pittsburgh.
Trubisky, who is from Mentor, OH (just an hour from the Pennsylvania state line), and his wife were married this past summer. This will be their first child together, which will certainly make Pittsburgh an important part of their lives forever.
I'm sure Trubisky is hoping he plays so well in 2022 that the Steelers have no choice but to offer him a long-term deal (he signed a two-year deal with this week).
Pittsburgh fans would likely be just fine with that, too. Because it would mean that Trubisky was playing at a Pro-Bowl level.
If Trubisky can play to that level, then the Steelers, thanks to also having an elite defense, could be a legitimate threat to reach the Super Bowl in 2022.
With all the hype the AFC West is receiving right now, folks shouldn't forget about the Steelers in the AFC North.
