There's a new narrative surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers that popped up this weekend that makes zero sense.

Based on preseason action, it appears that rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett might be the Steelers' best option to be the starter in week one against the Cincinnati Bengals.

But there are numerous folks — both fans and media — who feel like Pickett shouldn't start because Pittsburgh's offensive line isn't very good.

The feeling is that Pickett will be "ruined" playing behind a bad offensive line.

From The Athletic:

Pickett’s only incompletion on that scoring drive to end the first half Saturday came when he clocked the ball. Through two preseason games, he is 19-of-22 for 171 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and a quarterback rating of 142.1. But the Pittsburgh offensive line, which has struggled in the preseason as it did throughout camp, could make the Steelers stick to the original plan of Mitch Trubisky.

I understand the logic — Pickett is the future for the Steelers and there shouldn't be any rush to trot him out there.

But at the same time, if Pickett is the best option for Pittsburgh — and based on what we've seen the past two weeks that could be the case — then he has to be the starter.

NFL teams put the best 11 on the field — regardless of the situation.

The Steelers have a legitimate chance to win the AFC North in 2022. Their defense is elite. And they have a quarterback in Pickett that can run Matt Canada's offense more effectively than Ben Roethlisberger. If Pittsburgh thinks Mitch Trubisky is the best option to start, then they should start him.

But if they think the best option is Pickett, then they can't sit him just because the offensive line is playing poorly.

If Pickett is who the Steelers think he is, then he'll help hide the poor play of the offensive line to some extent (much like Joe Burrow has done with the Bengals…to some extent).

I have a feeling that Tomlin will put the best quarterback on the field. I don't think he's going into the season with a starting quarterback that he doesn't think is the best option.

Now, as for which quarterback Tomlin will actually choose? Well, he has a good poker face so far — it could go either way.

Which means we're all going to have to wait a bit longer to find out who the starter will be for Pittsburgh in 2022.
