Steelers rookie learns the hard way following NFL’s punishment for his ‘obscene gesture’ against the Detroit Lions in Week 16
That’s an expensive bird.
The actions that caught the attention of the camera crew in Detroit last weekend were mostly related to the altercation between DK Metcalf and a Lions fan. Rightfully so, as the interaction would make headlines all week and result in a two-game suspension and loss of $45m in guarantees for Metcalf.
Within that game, however, Steelers rookie DT Yahya Black was seen flicking off the sideline after making a play in the backfield. Well, I don’t know how many birds that Black has flipped in his lifetime, but I’m just about positive that none of them cost as much as the one he had against the Lions.
Yahya Black fined $5,194 for an “obscene gesture” against Lions
That’s a hefty amount for simply raising your finger, but the NFL views said gesture as obscene and they have acted accordingly. The fifth round pick out of Iowa isn’t exactly making second contract money just yet, so I would assume he keeps his fingers down going forward.
“Players are notified of violations and may appeal any ruling. Cases are heard by appeals officers and former NFL players, Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster or Jordy Nelson, who are jointly appointed and paid by the NFL/NFLPA. The decisions made are final and binding.”
“The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.” -NFL Operations
Black wasn’t the only Steeler who was fined, however, with Alex Highsmith also being docked $12,172 for his trip of Lions quarterback Jared Goff in the fourth quarter of the game. That trip pushed the Lions downfield and would have been part of the blooper reel that lost the Steelers the game had Pittsburgh let Detroit score.
I’m sure Highsmith will pay the fine and be happy that’s all it cost him and his team.
