Dallas Cowboys fans are no strangers to this stage: On the heels of contract negotiations that will likely result on Micah Parsons becoming the highest-paid defender in NFL history, it's rumor season at The Star.

Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport from NFL Network reported on Sunday leading up to Super Bowl LIX that the Cowboys have held internal discussions about potentially trading Parsons.

"While there have been no trade talks, sources say there have at least been some internal discussions about whether to pay Parsons or trade him for a king's ransom," Pelissero and Rapoport wrote. "If the Cowboys are willing to listen, they may get it."

The Cowboys have said in the past they don't envision Parsons being off the team in the future and Jerry Jones even said this week this offseason will likely be similar to last year's, with the priority being reaching an extension with the superstar defender. Stephen Jones said in November: "I can't imagine there's a scenario where he's not wearing a star on his helmet."

Parsons is under contract through the 2025 season, in which he'll be due $24 million.

If the Cowboys were to trade Parsons, it would be best for them to move them in the next few months. Micah has been pressuring the team to hurry with the extension and even said Super Bowl week the team can't afford to keep waiting to get deals done.

Evidence exists suggesting early extensions lead to better cap management for NFL teams and a new deal for Parsons would relieve the Cowboys' cap situation for 2025.

What could the market be like for Micah Parsons?

Given his caliber and superstar status, Parsons could land the Cowboys big-time compensation, including multiple first-round picks. Perhaps Myles Garrett could provide a measuring stick if traded for and even he might not be as expensive as Parsons, who is four years younger.

Is a Micah Parsons trade likely?

I believe not. There's a scenario where the Cowboys could decide to be proactive and move on from a special talent like Parsons' to rebuild the team but it's not their way of doing business.

They are however, known for loving to stay in the headlines, and this could be an example of it. That includes drawing out negotiations more than needed and certainly more than usual compared to other NFL teams.

But as of right now, I'd be surprised if a trade is what the Cowboys are aiming for.
