The 2023 offseason has been crazy for a lot of teams. The Houston Texans drafted at picks No. 1 and 2; the Miami Dolphins got Jalen Ramsey, and several quarterbacks became the highest-paid of all time, resetting the market.
The Raiders made so many moves this offseason – some that we wouldn't have seen coming just a year ago. They signed some guys that know the system and some guys that could help the defense at least improve. But their biggest move was drafting their cornerstone player and a guy who will be the franchise's future face.
The Raider's biggest deficiency on the roster was their defense. Now, they have a guy who can lead the unit for years to come.
Las Vegas Raiders: Drafting DE Tyree Wilson at No. 7 overall is much more of a forward-thinking investment than, say, signing Jimmy Garoppolo or Jakobi Meyers as immediate Patriots transplants. Paired with Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones, the Texas Tech product has a chance to be part of a truly fearsome edge rotation. –Cody Benjamin, CBS Sports
The Raiders needed major help on the defensive side of the ball. They had one of the worst units on that side in 2022 and haven't had a good defense since; I'm not sure when. That is how long it's been.
Wilson is a guy that is going to replicate what Chandler Jones was supposed to do last season. Jones could still have a bit of juice left, but he is empty as far as things are looking right now. Wilson provides the same skill set; he brings power, a bit of speed, and an abundance of pass rushes.
They took a flier on Wilson because the Raiders need another guy on that side of the ball who is a dawg. If you look back at their championship teams and the teams in the 80s and 90s, they were built on defense. Those teams were known for their rough, physical defense.
Wilson is going to help bring that side of Raiders football back.
