The Las Vegas Raiders found one of the biggest steals of the 2023 free agency period when they signed wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, who ended up being one of, if not the best, wide receiver two in the league. There were times when he was the go-to guy rather than Davante Adams.
While the Raiders didn't have a great offense, they were able to find a complementary piece for Adams and a guy who was very reliable on third down. He was also used as a tool, as he finished with two rushing touchdowns as well.
It's no secret that Meyers was upset that the New England Patriots didn't re-sign him but signed JuJu Smith-Schuster.
"They just wouldn't budge. At the end of the day, (Bill Belichick) didn't want to move," Meyers said on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Felger & Mass Show on February. "And I respected it. Like it is his job to do what's best for his team or what he thinks is best for the team. It just didn't align on what I felt like I was worth."
Since then, the Raiders have benefited from the Patriots mistake, while the Patriots regret it.
"That's never the mentality that anyone should have, let alone me," Davnte Adams said of learning the game and being done learning. "I'm learning something new, and the thing is, you can learn in so many ways, like I learned from new guys. I learned so many things from Jakobi [Meyers] this year that I didn't know before. He was basically the best-kept secret in the league for me."
"We shouldn't have let him go," New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft replied on The Shop.
"I was going to get to that, but I didn't want to say it. I appreciate you, though," Adams said with a laugh.
In 2023, in a bad offense, Meyers finished with 800 receiving yards, eight touchdowns, and two rushing touchdowns. He was an elite tool last year and helped the Raiders win games when nothing was working on offense. But, remember, that was with bad coaching, in a bad offense, with bad quarterback play. He could be even better next season with a new quarterback, as the Raiders have Gardener Minshew, and will likely draft a rookie in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Meanwhile, Smith-Schuster, who they paid a three-year, $33 million deal, finsihed with 260 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. Meyers was much better, and is on nearly the same exact contract. It;s safe to say he is making the Patriots regret their decision.
