The Las Vegas Raiders have had a hectic offseason so far, as they have done some things fans agree with and don't. But, in my opinion, they have gotten better, as crazy as that sounds.
They got rid of their franchise quarterback in Derek Carr, and the fan base was split on whether being the right decision or not. Then they grabbed Jimmy Garoppolo, a quarterback who is not only injury prone but isn't the best thrower.
They got him some more weapons, added a few guys to the much-needed secondary, and have the seventh pick in the draft coming up.
But, even after all of that, they are a better team. But PFF's recent power rankings after the first wave of free agency don't seem to agree. They have the Raiders as the 22-second team in the league, which, is surprising to me. Here is what they had to say about the Raiders' offseason:
Biggest loss: QB Derek Carr
Biggest gain: QB Jimmy Garoppolo
With a new quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo and a new receiver in Jakobi Meyers, will the Raiders be able to put together an above-average offense? Looking at the graphic below, Garoppolo had a lower turnover-worthy play rate than Carr and was similar in big-time throw rate.
I obviously feel they should be higher because of all the reasons I listed above. But, let's break it down a bit more.
I actually think the signing of Garoppolo was a great one. They got a guy who can run the offense because of his time in New England and they got him a receiver that ran the same offense last year in Jakobi Meyers.
They also got Marcus Epps, a new safety formerly on the Philadelphia Eagles that should improve the area, and they also grabbed Duke Shelley, a cornerback who played great last year with the Vikings.
So far, they have improved every area that needed improving, besides the defensive line, which they could do in the draft, and the offensive line, which could also improve in the draft.
22 is low for me. If I ranked them, I'd have them somewhere in the 20-15 range. So, yeah, 22 is kind of surprising to me.
