A much-improved offensive performance from the San Francisco 49ers did not yield a victory in their 40-34 loss to the Detroit Lions on Monday.

The penultimate game of a disappointing season may not have gone their way, but the Niners were given a reason for optimism for the future through one of the main sources of their explosion on offense.

First-round wide receiver Ricky Pearsall has had a rookie year he will never forget, with his first year in the NFL dominated by the remarkable story of him surviving a gunshot wound through the chest during an attempted armed robbery in August. Pearsall did not suffer any damage to his internal organs.

As a result of that incident, Pearsall had to wait until Week 7 to make his NFL debut, and he had only 190 yards receiving and one touchdown going into the Week 17 primetime clash with Detroit.

But the breakout game that illustrated why the 49ers took him 31st overall came in spectacular fashion against a struggling Lions defense, Pearsall going for 141 yards receiving and a touchdown.

His yardage tally marked the highest by any 49ers rookie receiver in a single game since Jerry Rice racked up 241 in 1985.

For quarterback Brock Purdy, it was no surprise to see Pearsall dice up Detroit, with his prolific performance the result the former Florida Gator's determination and willingness to learn.

"We've all seen that in Ricky since he's been here, the way he runs routes and he's explosive," said Purdy in his postgame press conference.

"And for all of us, it's like, man, we just need to get him in some really good situations and get him the ball because he's a playmaker. And so tonight to be able to do that for him, man, I'm really, really happy for him. I know that that'll be good for us moving forward, just our chemistry. And so more than anything, really happy for him and he deserves it. And he's gonna continue to do that kind of stuff for us."

Pearsall's display was just reward for him going the extra mile to work with Purdy to make up for lost time following the shooting.

"We've had a couple of days where we stayed after and make sure we get some routes in," added Purdy. "And he's still so young and like a sponge when it comes to learning route trees and our offense and stuff.

"And so for me, it's like he's gonna listen, he's willing to be coached. And so we've had multiple days where we stay after and I sort of explain to him what I'm thinking on a route and then he tells me how he's feeling. So I'm really excited, man, to have him and to continue to work with him.

"Ricky knows who he is and his purpose in life, you could see it in the locker room and stuff. Yes, he's a rookie, but he's very mature and I just love his attitude. After games, he'll text me and just talk about routes and stuff. Like he's hungry and which I love and he tells me time and time again, like if I missed something or if he could have done something better, like he'll text me and just be like, 'dude, I want the best for you and for us moving forward'.

"So like Ricky's on the same page as us, man, and as a quarterback, that's all you could ask for. And so he's had a great attitude all year.

"Obviously, it's a long year as a rookie and you go through so much and that dude has been through more than anybody. So for him to come out tonight and just compete and stay consistent with his routine all year long, then you see it and showed it tonight, so really happy for him."

Linebacker Fred Warner and George Kittle echoed Purdy's sentiments, praising Pearsall for his persistence even during a spell in which he went three games without a catch between Week 11 and Week 13.

"Ricky's made the right stuff," said Warner. "He's always been, just because he hadn't had that big performance. You keep knocking at the doors, it's gonna come at some point. He had it in the biggest moment tonight."

Kittle highlighted the long-term impact Pearsall's display could have, adding: "Those are the games that I've always expected him to have. Just watching him practice in OTAs, every day he would go off for 100 plus yards. And just to get that game under his belt, I think will just raise his confidence a ton.

"Because it's hard to go out there and just get, not a lot of catches, not open a lot. Sometimes it's the ball and the game just doesn't go your way. And for him to go out there and do that, just stack a bunch of catches, run really efficiently, get downhill, did all the things that we needed him to do.

"I think that's just gonna raise his confidence a bunch and just a great step forward in his early young career."
