Sportsmanship is awesome. It is necessary in professional sports. New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr showed it during the team's loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
In fact, he may have done it in a way that will frustrate fans.
Carr actually congratulated Jessie Bates after the Falcons safety nabbed a pick-six off of him in the first quarter to give Atlanta the lead.
The Falcons did not look back after grabbing the momentum on that play. Carr's comments regarding the play are sure to anger some fans. They do not want to hear that he gave props to a division rival's defender after making a major mistake.
Carr said that Bates' play was actually a 'bad' play, but he told Bates that he 'beat him' in that scenario.
"You beat me.. You made a great play" — Carr to Bates after pick-six
It's fair for Carr to do that in-game because he and Bates have interacted before, but he probably should have kept the discussion to himself. Saints fans never want to hear that you said something positive to a Falcons player after a major mistake. It's just a bit embarrassing.
Carr also acknowledged the overall red zone struggles on offense. The Saints are in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring touchdowns when they get inside the opponent's twenty yard line.
Two Saints wide receivers leave game vs. Falcons in serious pain
The New Orleans Saints lost wide receiver Michael Thomas in Week 10 before their bye. He is now on injured reserve. In Week 12, players are dropping like flies for the Saints. Wide receiver Rashid Shaheed left in the first half with an injury. Early in the second half, Chris Olave took a hard hit […]
In all phases, Carr and the offense need to improve. They are too talented to see these struggles, and now, they are dealing with a plethora of injuries.
