To the New Orleans Saints fans that want change at the quarterback position, you're out of luck. Derek Carr is going to be your starter in 2024 – plain and simple.
With that in mind, Carr played quite well over the second half of the year for the black and gold. After dealing with plenty of injuries in his first season, he completed his campaign with the Saints with a 22/28, four touchdown performance against the Atlanta Falcons. He was impressive, period.
Carr's comments after the victory may have the longest-lasting effect on the fan base, though. After some late-game drama involving the Saints players' decision to score in the final moments of a blowout, Carr stood up for his teammates.
The Saints QB was asked if it was an issue that the coaches' play-call was overruled by the players.
He said that it was not because players want to take care of their guys, and sometimes, there’s not much that coaches can do about that.
He's just telling the truth and sticking up for his guys – an action that head coach Dennis Allen could take a lesson in for New Orleans.
Carr has played through injuries and performed well when his offensive line and play-caller have also done right by him. That's not to say that his play cannot improve going forward. It certainly can.
That being said, Derek Carr's leadership and performance on the football field this season are far from the main reasons that they are now watching the playoffs from the couch.
