The New Orleans Saints are on bye for Week 11. That did not stop the NFL from punishing them a bit, though. After their loss in Week 10 to the Minnesota Vikings, four Saints players received a fine for a penalty from that matchup.

  • Paulson Adebo, Unnecessary Roughness: $7,644 (Q2, 1:01)
  • Carl Granderson, A Hit on a Quarterback: $16,391 (Q3, 11:46)
  • Tyrann Mathieu, Unnecessary Roughness: $10,927 (Q4, 10:49)
  • Alontae Taylor, Unnecessary Roughness: $9,097 (Q4, 5:37)

Granderson's fine is especially egregious. His hit on Vikings QB Josh Dobbs was not dirty or dangerous whatsoever.

The three unnecessary roughness penalties are examples of avoidable mistakes for New Orleans, though. Even if the plays aren't purposeful, the Saints are not playing well enough to give teams free personal fouls.

Players get letters sent to them to notify them of the violations. They can appeal any rulings that are made. Those appeals are heard by former NFL players Derrick Brooks or James Thrash. Their decisions are considered final and binding.

It is unknown whether or not any of the four players for the Saints' fine list will appeal at this time.

Regardless, it is a tough break for those players – as none of the hits seemed malicious. NFL players have been quite vocal about the penalty fines all season long. There has been a noticeable increase this season.

The Saints play the Atlanta Falcons in Week 12.
