The New Orleans Saints have an opportunity to make a pick in the 2024 NFL Draft that they haven't done since before 2000. How? They will will need draft a tight end in the first or second round, and it is a possibility.
According to Sam Hoppen, the Saints have not drafted a tight end in the first two rounds since 1998.
In 1998, the Saints selected Washington TE Cameron Cleeland with the 40th overall pick.
Since then, they have not spent a round one or two pick on the position. Could they change that in 2024? It's possible.
If they do it, their tight end pick would probably be Georgia TE Brock Bowers in the first round.
It's hard to highlight a tight end that they may target with their second-round selection. A few TEs are projected to go on day two, but pick 45 would be quite early for them.
Not to mention, Bowers has been a pick for them in many mock drafts. Plenty of recent mocks have the Saints going OT, DL, or TE with the 14th overall pick.
Bowers is an elite TE prospect that is viewed as an offensive game changer in this class. He's widely expected to be taken in the top fifteen selections in the first round. The Saints could use another offensive playmaker.
Tight end is a position where New Orleans has some depth but limited upside. Taysom Hill is listed as a TE, but we all know that he is a unique case all on his own.
Juwan Johnson has improved mightily over the past two seasons, but he is not under contract after 2024. Not to mention, his run blocking is average. Foster Moreau was signed last offseason and did not produce much on the receiving side in 2023. He's a better blocker than any other Saints tight end, though.
All in all, adding Bowers as a long-term investment on offense could make plenty of sense. With that pick, the Saints would break their streak that has lasted over twenty years.
