The New Orleans Saints got an update on their draft picks for the 2024 NFL Draft on Friday. They officially received slots for their compensatory draft selections.

How the actual system works is unknown for comp picks, but the method of determining which teams receive what picks essentially boils down to as such: The bigger the contract signed by the departed player, the higher the draft pick, but teams will never receive anything higher than a third-rounder.

But, the picks get cancelled out once teams sign a player or players in free agency. The NFL awards 32 picks, in all, each year and teams are given no more than four picks.

Nowadays, teams are also awarded third-round compensatory selections for two years if they lose a minority coach or executive to a promotion with another team. And, they receive individual picks for each coach/executive, like the San Francisco 49ers via DeMeco Ryans and Ran Carthon.

The Saints will receive three compensatory picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.

All three picks will be in the fifth round (167, 169, and 174 overall).

They received those picks due to the departure of Kaden Elliss, David Onyemata, and Marcus Davenport during last year's free agency. Now, New Orleans owns nine total picks in the entire draft.

Knowing the Saints, do not be shocked if they use that extra draft capital to move up at least once during the event. The full list of all of their picks will be released soon.
