The New Orleans Saints did not play on the field today. Unfortunately, they took another painful blow, though. After today's action, the Saints sit in last place in the lowly NFC South. It is the worst division in football, and it isn't particularly close.

That's not even the most frustrating part of the Saints' standing right now.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got clobbered today by the San Francisco 49ers. The Saints struggled against the 49ers, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the performance by Tampa Bay. Both sides of the ball looked horrendous for the Bucs.

The Saints could be in a much different place if they would have kept their lead last week against Tampa Bay.

They had the game in the bag, and they choked it away. The offense played too conservatively in the second half, and the defense made massive mistakes late in the game. In turn, they lost basically any chance at winning the division.

If they would have beaten the Bucs, there would be a four-team tie in the division currently. They have an easier remaining schedule than Tampa Bay, too.

Overall, it's just salt in the wound for the Saints and their fans. If the Bucs looked better this week or got a win, then it would be easier to stomach the fact that the Saints lost to them.

Instead, New Orleans can only wonder about what could have been for them in the NFC South.
