Secondary depth has long since been an issue for the San Francisco 49ers. They are actively working to make sure that is not the case in 2024.

The 49ers have signed cornerback Rock Ya-Sin to a one-year deal.

Ya-Sin marks the third cornerback signing of free agency for the 49ers, following Isaac Yiadom and Chase Lucas.

Lucas was a signing made with special teams in mind, but the Niners see Yiadom as a corner who can play significant snaps after a strong year with the New Orleans Saints in 2023.

Ya-Sin did not impress last season, but with 66 games to his name over five seasons, the 27-year-old brings significant experience and further solidifies the Niners' depth behind Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir.

The Niners relied heavily on Ambry Thomas down the stretch in the second half of last season, Thomas playing the outside on nickel downs when Lenoir kicked inside to the slot.

However, Thomas has endured an up-and-down career since being drafted in the third round in 2021 and struggled markedly in the postseason before being benched in the Super Bowl.

The signings of Yiadom and now Ya-Sin give the 49ers viable alternatives to Thomas who could play the outside on passing downs when Lenoir moves to the nickel. With both being one-year deals, they do not prohibit San Francisco from taking a rookie corner high in the draft.

Last season for the Baltimore Ravens, Ya-Sin allowed a career-low completion percentage of 52.4, giving up a catch on 11 of 21 targets. However, those completions averaged 16.1 yards, with two going for touchdowns. He allowed a passer rating of 112.6 that marked the worst of his career.

But still in the traditional prime years of his career, the 49ers will be hoping Ya-Sin can enjoy a turnaround that puts them in a very strong position at corner.
