The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with a ton of injuries. It’s become a massive issue for their season outlook, as Nick Bosa is out for the season and George Kittle remains on injured reserve. Quarterback Brock Purdy is also dealing with multiple ailments, and the team’s latest move may have tipped their hand regarding his availability in the coming weeks.

Young QB Adrian Martinez is joining the active roster, and it seems like he could stay there for a bit. San Francisco will face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5 on Thursday Night Football. Check out the latest details regarding the QB position for Kyle Shanahan’s offense below.

49ers promote quarterback and signal potential bad Brock Purdy news

According to Matt Barrows, the 49ers promoted Adrian Martinez to the active roster. This process is different from an elevation, as Martinez is now on the 53-man roster. They elevated Trevis Gipson and Malik Turner from the practice squad for the game against Los Angeles.

This decision means that San Francisco may have interest in keeping Martinez around on the active roster, instead of just elevating him for this divisional showdown. Martinez won’t automatically revert back to the practice squad, since they signed him to the active roster. This points to Purdy potentially having to miss more time than just this week.

Mac Jones will start for the 49ers on Thursday Night Football, but more starts may be in line for him following this choice.

San Francisco may have to rely on Mac Jones

The former New England Patriots starter has always been held in high regard by Kyle Shanahan, and that premise may be put to the test if Purdy misses an extended portion of time. The 49ers are set to face some tough defensive units in the coming weeks, including a few of the best defensive lines in the NFL.

Accordingly, it may be tough skiing for Jones and a banged up offensive unit. Over the next four games after Week 5, San Francisco will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, and New York Giants.

“Mac Jones has looked pretty good in his first two starts, but Week 5 against the Rams will be a litmus test. He faces a Chris Shula led defense that will aim to get after him with pressure.

But should Purdy remain out and Jones the starter, it won’t get much easier. Jones will be playing three teams via the Bucs, Falcons and Texans in his next three games. All of these teams are led by defensive minded head coaches and will do their best to make Jones’ life miserable.

I’m sure Jones wanted another shot to prove he’s a starter, especially with the head coach that wanted him from the beginning. Well, now he’s got his shot. It won’t be easy, but it could be his last best shot to prove he has what it takes to be a starter.” — Rob Gregson, A to Z Sports

Of course, we will have to wait and see if the team gives any sort of specific update on Purdy next week, but they may have already given everyone a hint regarding his health and timeline to return ahead of TNF.
