The San Francisco 49ers had reason to celebrate on Tuesday as they tied Christian McCaffrey down to an extension that will keep the reigning Offensive Player of the Year with the team through the 2027 season. Yet they are still clearly some way off reaching an agreement with Brandon Aiyuk.

While McCaffrey, with his new deal secured, reported for mandatory minicamp after skipping OTAs, Aiyuk did not do the same, indicating there has been little progress in his talks with the Niners.

Failing to report for OTAs does not incur any penalties as that section of the offseason workout program is entirely voluntary. However, by failing to report for minicamp, All-Pro wideout Aiyuk is subject to fines.

Teams can fine players $16,953 for skipping the first day, $33,908 for the second day and $50,855 for the third day.

As such, Aiyuk is at risk of being fined a six-figure sum if he misses the entirety of the 49ers' minicamp.

Such fines are often offset by bonuses handed to a player when the holdout comes to an end and the two sides do eventually agree on a deal.

That is what both the 49ers and Aiyuk will have in mind in this scenario. Right now, though, his decision to not just skip the practices, but fail to report entirely gives a clue as to just how far away the two sides are from reaching a resolution that would see Aiyuk become the latest in a long line of wideouts to receive a huge payday this offseason.
