Brock Purdy is almost certainly set to receive his first Pro Bowl selection.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback will find out if he has made the cut for the Pro Bowl Games on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, but the final results from the fan voting gave a massive clue.
Purdy was the lead vote-getter among NFL fans ahead of teammate Christian McCaffrey. Along with their star quarterback and do-it-all running back, the 49ers were also represented in the top five of fan voting by tight end George Kittle, who was fourth.
Of course, fan voting makes up only one third of the votes for the Pro Bowl, with players and coaches from around the league also playing a role in deciding who gets a spot at the NFL's All-Star week of skills events, culminating with a flag football game.
But Purdy appears destined to receive deserved recognition for a stunning first season as the 49ers' starting quarterback, one in which he has stunningly built on his remarkable emergence last season by breaking the 49ers' single-season record for passing yardage. He also leads the NFL in touchdown percentage, passer rating, QBR and every yards per attempt metric.
Neither Purdy nor any of his teammates will have a desire to play in the Pro Bowl Games as the 49ers, the one seed in the NFC, look to make it back to the Super Bowl.
But they are poised to be extremely well represented in the initial NFC roster, with the 49ers leading the vote-getting at 15 different positions. Kyle Juszczyk, Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams, Aaron Banks and Jake Brendel join Purdy, McCaffrey and Kittle in leading the votes on the offensive side.
On defense, Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Fred Warner and Charvarius Ward stand above all others at their respective positions, while all the 49ers' specialists apart from kicker Jake Moody lead the votes in the NFC.
The fan vote is obviously in large part a popularity contest, but a significant portion of the names on that list can expect to receive a place on the initial roster, illustrating just how complete the roster is and just how dominant the 49ers have been in an outstanding regular season.
Kyle Shanahan makes smart decision on Brock Purdy
It makes perfect sense.
