Brock Purdy is likely to become a lot more expensive for the San Francisco 49ers after the 2024 season, and their starting quarterback has already received a healthy boost to his wallet for his remarkable 2023 efforts.
Purdy was paid $739,795 in performance-based pay for the 2023 season. The performance-based pay program is a collectively bargained benefit that compensates all players based upon playing time and salary levels.
After featuring in 16 of the 49ers' 17 regular-season games — he was rested for the meaningless Week 18 game with the Los Angeles Rams — Purdy ranked just inside the top 25 for performance-based pay distributions.
While that is a very nice payday, it pales in comparison to what he will likely receive next offseason should he replicate his MVP-caliber 2023 production in the 2024 season.
Niners owner Jed York has indicated he expects Purdy to ask "for something that no one has ever asked for before" when he becomes eligible for an extension next year, indicating San Francisco is prepared to pay him a contract that will reset the market at the quarterback position and make the final pick of the 2022 draft the highest-paid player in the NFL.
“To me, the quarterback is the most important position not just in football, but all of sports, and those guys should be paid a lot of money," said York.
A potentially historic deal is coming down the pike for Purdy. For now, though, he'll have to be satisfied with what is still a very nice bonus.
