Brock Purdy took his place alongside the two greatest quarterbacks in San Francisco 49ers history on Sunday with his performance in the Week 11 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Purdy finished 21 of 25 for 333 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions and a perfect passer rating of 158.3.
He became only the third quarterback to post a perfect passer rating, following in the footsteps of both Steve Young and Joe Montana, who each did so in a 1989 season that ended with the 49ers winning a second successive Super Bowl.
Purdy understands the significance of being in such company, even if he does not understand the passer rating statistic.
"What an honor," said Purdy in his post-game press conference. "At the same time, I feel like there's still some plays and stuff that I wish I had back, so I'm not completely content with just that. But thought it was a great game with the guys around me, the coaching and the play calling. All of it. So that's a testament to the team really."
Later asked how he feels about passer rating as a stat and if it's something that's discussed in the locker room, Purdy replied: "I still don't really know what it means, honestly."
In its simplest terms, passer rating is calculated by a mathematical formula in which completions, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions are divided by attempts and then multiplied by a coefficient.
In detail, it's much more complex than that, so Purdy can be forgiven for not getting into the weeds with a stat that most struggle to comprehend.
Instead, he can just take some satisfaction in knowing he has Young and Montana for company while understanding he has plenty more to do to get the 49ers to the top of the mountain as they did way back in that '89 season.
