The San Francisco 49ers avoided their nightmare scenario in Week 15 as what initially looked to be a scary injury for Brock Purdy was quickly revealed not to be serious.
Now, as the 49ers begin to turn the page from celebrating a second successive NFC West title victory over the Arizona Cardinals to preparing for a massive Christmas Day game with the Baltimore Ravens, they can look forward with full confidence in their quarterback's health.
Purdy revealed after the game he suffered a stinger on the second-quarter hit from Dennis Gardeck that knocked him out for three plays. Asked on Monday if Purdy was dealing with any lingering effects from that injury, head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a positive update.
"Not that I heard. I mean, he felt good last night, and they didn't give me any information today that they're concerned about," Shanahan told his conference call a day after the Niners' 45-29 win.
"So I'm assuming it's your typical stinger, and the fact that he was able to get through the game was a pretty good sign."
Purdy threw for 242 yards and four touchdowns in his first NFL game in his home state of Arizona.
He now has 3,795 yards passing, putting him just 205 away from becoming only the third 49ers quarterback to record 4,000 in a season. Jeff Garcia was the last to do it for San Francisco in 2000. Purdy also leads the NFL with 29 touchdown passes and is first in every yards per attempt metric, passer rating and QBR.
The MVP frontrunner after his latest excellent showing, Purdy's status in the race for that award will be tested sternly by the Ravens, the AFC's top seed, but the extra day off to recover should ensure he is more than ready for that challenge in an extremely intriguing contest.
