There are a lot of conflicting opinions on Brock Purdy, but one thing is undeniable, he knows how to win against the blitz.

Per NextGen Stats, Purdy had a league high +53.2 Expected Points Added against the blitz during the regular season.

That would seemingly stand him in good stead for a Super Bowl 58 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs and a defensive coordinator in Steve Spagnuolo who is more than happy to consistently send extra rushers at opposing quarterbacks.

Per Sports Info Solutions, the Chiefs blitz at the sixth-highest rate in the NFL and have the fifth-highest defensive success rate when doing so.

But the misconception around Spagnuolo is that he is all about the blitz. He is a defensive coordinator who can and will mix it up and find different ways to get quarterbacks unsettled.

The Baltimore Ravens learned the hard way about Spagnuolo's ability to cook up a gameplan to keep a seemingly unstoppable offense in check, the Chiefs having held Baltimore to just 10 points en route to victory in the AFC Championship Game.

In that game, the Chiefs went away from their tendencies, playing zone on 28 snaps and man on 15, while they blitzed on only 18 of their 46 defensive snaps.

Lamar Jackson's experience going against an extremely multiple Ravens defense in camp did him no favors against Kansas City, but Purdy does believe his work against a 49er defense that has had success with creative pressure looks and disguised coverages will pay dividends when he faces what Spagnuolo has planned.

"Going back to like camp, we’ve seen a lot of different pressure looks from our defense," Purdy told a press conference on Wednesday.

"We've had some good looks going up against Fred and Dre and those guys, that’s good for us to sink back and have that type of experience.

"But at the same time you know Spags does a good job of calling plays and pressures when you least expect it and try to get the offense caught off the guard. That’s the challenge, it’s going to come down to the heat of the battle, being ready for it and making the right decisions when they come."

Purdy built an MVP caliber season out of making the right decisions, though the blemish that would raise doubts about his ability to cope with Spagnuolo's Super Bowl edition of mad science is his Christmas Day meltdown against the Ravens, which saw him throw four interceptions in a 33-19 loss.

Yet if he passes the test against one of the best postseason game designers to grace the NFL, Purdy's previous failings will be banished to the dustier corners of league history.
