The Sunday Night Football clash between the 49ers and Cowboys was always, rightly or wrongly, going to be a referendum on both quarterbacks.
San Francisco signal-caller Brock Purdy has maintained his incredible start to his young career so far in 2023, and has yet to lose a game in which he has started and finished.
Still, the final pick in the 2022 draft has continued to divide opinion and, prior to kickoff at Levi's Stadium, NBC color analyst Cris Collinsworth added fuel to the already heated discourse.
Collinsworth, in his opening remarks, of the broadcast, said Purdy is "relevant in the MVP discussion".
That might not seem to be such a controversial comment about a quarterback who led the NFL in passer rating going into Week 5.
But, with many reticent to give Purdy credit because of the role Kyle Shanahan's offensive scheme plays in the production of one of the league's most potent attacks, Collinsworth's comments are sure to raise eyebrows.
Purdy will hope to make his remarks look less controversial with his performance in primetime.
