Brock Purdy will in Week 7 be tasked with a challenge he has yet to face so far during his brief but remarkable NFL career, bouncing back after a loss as the San Francisco 49ers take on the Minnesota Vikings in his Monday Night Football debut.
Last Sunday's defeat to the Cleveland Browns marked the first time Purdy had lost a game he both started and finished since he was catapulted into the starting quarterback role as a seventh-round rookie late last season.
Purdy had previously gone 12-0 in such games across the regular season and the playoffs, the only loss in a game he started being the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, which saw him tear an elbow ligament on San Francisco's first offensive series.
His performance against the Browns was undoubtedly the worst of Purdy's career. He completed just 12 of his 27 pass attempts for 125 yards and a touchdown with one interception, hist first since Week 17 of last season.
But Purdy was hamstrung by injuries to Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and left tackle Trent Williams, who battled through an ankle problem, with a ferocious Browns defense making life extremely difficult for him in the second half.
And head coach Kyle Shanahan saw some positives in Purdy's play in a challenging situation on the road.
Asked how he evaluated Purdy's Week 6 performance, Shanahan replied:
“Similar to everyone else. I mean, Brock missed a couple, so it wasn’t his best game. I still thought he made some real good plays too. Everyone was underdressed in that, it was a challenge on all fronts and especially some of the down and distances we were in. But it definitely wasn’t his best game. Just because it was his first loss and his first pick of the year, I still thought there was a number of things he did real well in that game too.”
Shanahan does not believe the outcome of a heartbreaking defeat that was sealed by a Jake Moody missed field goal will change Purdy's approach to a game against a Vikings defense that should be much more hospitable to the San Francisco offense despite its blitz-heavy tendencies.
“Same way he always does. I mean, we will see," Shanahan responded when asked how Purdy will attack this new challenge. "This is the first time responding to a loss, but in terms of not designating anything wins or losses.
"If we would’ve won in the last play of the game, he’d still have to respond the same way. So, it’s him just doing his job and coming in here and being the same way he has been since the day we’ve met him. I don’t think we’re stressed about that too much because I’ve never seen a different guy.”

It’s a lengthy list.
