Over a month on from falling short with the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58, quarterback Brock Purdy was on hand to experience another heartbreaking overtime loss, this time for his alma mater.
Purdy was at Stanford's Maples Pavilion, just 20 minutes from the 49ers' Levi's Stadium, on Sunday to watch Iowa State's women's basketball team face the Cardinal in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
He was sat in the press row for the game, with Purdy telling The Associated Press' Janie McCauley: "It means so much. As an alumni you're so proud to see the program do so well and going through this tournament and having the success that they've had. I've had their back. Blessed to be here to support them."
Unfortunately for the Cyclones, their run in March Madness came to end in a wild 87-81 defeat to two seed Stanford.
While he was not front and center on this occasion, disappointment in overtime will be an unwanted familiar feeling for Purdy, whose admirable performance against the Kansas City Chiefs was not enough for the 49ers in their 25-22 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The saving grace for Bay Area fans is that, on this occasion, it was their team on the right end of the result. They'll all be hoping Purdy's luck changes in his second season as the 49ers' starting quarterback in 2024.
San Francisco 49ers’ newest defensive linemen will hope to continue franchise’s fascinating streak
No wonder they want to play there.
