Brock Purdy's MVP chances may have come and gone, but the San Francisco 49ers quarterback has received some well-deserved recognition by being named to his first Pro Bowl.
Purdy was one of a league-leading nine 49ers named to the initial NFC roster on Wednesday.
It is just reward for an incredible first full season as San Francisco's starter, which has seen him set a new franchise record for single-season passing yardage, throwing for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. Purdy leads the NFL in touchdown percentage, passer rating, QBR and every yards per attempt metric.
He and the other 49ers selected will have no desire to play in the Pro Bowl Games as they look to reach Super Bowl 58. However, Purdy certainly has reason to celebrate his latest achievement.
Purdy cashes in thanks to Pro Bowl nod
By making the Pro Bowl in his second season as a seventh-round pick, Purdy has qualified for a substantial raise through the NFL’s Proven Performance Escalators. You can find more information on how they work here.
For Purdy, the one that matters is the Level Three escalator, pertaining to Pro Bowl selections.
An eligible player selected in the second through seventh rounds will qualify for the Level Three Proven Performance Escalator in his fourth League Year if he was selected to one or more Pro Bowls on the original ballot in any of his first three seasons. – NFL CBA
The Level Three PPE "will raise the base salary to the amount of the 2nd round RFA tender", per Over The Cap, which projects Purdy's raise to be one of $2.5 million.
For a player only set to earn $1.1 million in 2025, that is a substantial pay rise.
Purdy will earn significantly more than that whenever the 49ers decide to extend him, which they cannot do until after his third year in the NFL.
Shoud he continue on his current trajectory, the 49ers will likely waste little time in taking that opportunity. For now, though, Purdy can be sure more money is definitely coming his way in 2025 thanks to his remarkable 2023.
