All seemed right in the world for the San Francisco 49ers to win Super Bowl 58 as they took a 10-3 lead into halftime.
But then Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs came alive late in the third quarter and scored their first touchdown.
The Niners were able to respond with another touchdown in the fourth quarter, thanks to wide receiver Juan Jennings, but then Jake Moody's field goal was blocked.
Kansas City didn't never reached the end zone again but Mahomes put Harrison Butker in perfect field goal range twice to bring the Super Bowl into overtime — for just the second time in NFL history.
Chiefs Force 49ers to Settle for OT Field Goal
The 49ers won the coin flip and decided to take the first possession in OT, which came back to bite them.
Under the new overtime rules, both teams now get a chance to score so it would have been fine for the 9ers to defer to KC and then figure out exactly how many points they needed to win the game but, of course, it didn't work out like that.
Purdy failed to lead a scoring drive as he was flushed from the pocket in the red zone and flopped his attempted pass to Jennings.
The 49ers settled for a field goal.
Mahomes responded by topping off the Chiefs' possession with a game-winning touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman with three seconds left on the clock or the Lombardi.
Kansas City won their second straight Super Bowl 25-22.
Purdy finished the night completing 23 of 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown.
While the second-year quarterback pointed fingers at missed opportunities and penalties, he ultimately took full responsibility for the heartbreaking loss.
"When you have a good offense like the Chiefs do and what Mahomes can do, for us it's like, 'alright we have to score touchdowns' and we had opportunities to do so I think," Purdy told reporters after the Super Bowl. "Shot ourselves in the foot with penalties and just the operations and stuff. So I gotta be better in terms of in terms of leading the guys and how I handle things in the huddle and tell them what to expect, stuff like that. But at the end of the day, we have the team, the offense to score touchdowns and I think I failed to put of team in a position to do that."
But as we know, it wasn't all Purdy's fault.
