Charles Omenihu was always going to be a tough player for the San Francisco 49ers to re-sign this offseason but, watching Sunday's game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers, their front office might look back on its inability to bring him back with some regret.
Omenihu, following a six-game suspension, made his Chiefs debut in Week 7, and it proved an extremely impressive one.
The former 49ers edge rusher quickly delivered a reminder of why the Chiefs gave him a two-year, $16 million contract with the kind of impactful performance that was a regular feature of his time with San Francisco.
Omenihu finished with a sack, a tackle for loss, two quarterback hits and batted pass that led to an interception of Justin Herbert.
His display may have been a frustrating one to watch for a Niners team that has gotten precious little from its non-Nick Bosa edge rushers since Drake Jackson's three-sack game in Week 1.
The 49ers recently acquired Randy Gregory in a trade with the Denver Broncos in a bid to improve their production off the edge.
Gregory had a sack in his debut against the Cleveland Browns last week, but the 49ers will need more from him and additional contributions from Jackson and Clelin Ferrell to fully forget about a talent they let out the door in Omenihu.
The 49ers suddenly have the deepest interior pass rush in the NFL
It’s now an area of huge strength.
