The price of a third-round pick that the San Francisco 49ers paid to land Chase Young seemed very cheap when the deal was first reported, and it looks an even more astute move by the Niners when you look at the specific selection they used.

Per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the 49ers used the compensatory third-round pick they received for former director of player personnel Ran Carthon becoming general manager of the Tennessee Titans and former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans being hired as the head coach of the Houston Texans.

Young is a free agent in the offseason and could command a high price on the open market if he helps San Francisco's defense rediscover its best down the stretch. If he does prove to only be a rental for the second half of the season, and the 49ers hope, the postseason, the most the Niners could receive in the form of a compensatory pick is a third-rounder in 2025.

San Francisco will ideally hope it can find a way to hang on to Young for the long term, given he is only 24 and likely has his best years ahead of him if he can stay healthy.

But if the Niners cannot realize that ambition, then they will essentially have acquired Young for just over half a season for the price of moving a compensatory third-round pick back one year to 2025.

The 49ers needed to do something to add some juice to a defense that had no answers to the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday. They have managed to make a major, potentially game-changing addition, and it cost them basically nothing to do so.
