Chrisitan McCaffrey got to meet a former member of the 49ers in their Week 2 win over the Rams on Sunday, but his interaction with Ahkello Witherspoon was not at all friendly.
In the first quarter, McCaffrey burst free down the left sideline on a toss play and only had one man to beat, ex-49ers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. He was unable to do so, but made sure Witherspoon felt his presence at the end of a 51-yard run by driving the third-round pick to the turf with a vicious stiff arm.
Both McCaffrey and Witherspoon came up exchanging words before an official stepped in. Afterwards, the San Francisco running back insisted the two were simply exchanging pleasantries.
Asked what he said to Witherspoon, McCaffrey told a press conference: "'What’s up man, good to see you.' Just casual conversation."
Despite McCaffrey's claims, it looked like anything but casual conversation and, based on his lightning fast start to the season, Witherspoon is unlikely to be the last defender aggravated by the San Francisco star this campaign.
McCaffrey already has 268 rushing yards and two touchdowns to his name this season.
It is ambitious to expect McCaffrey to maintain a pace of 134 rushing yards per game, but he is on course to smash his career-high of 1,387 yards. Secondary defenders across the league need to be ready for the challenge Witherspoon faced of stopping one of the NFL's most electric playmakers in the open field as this seemingly perfect marriage of player and scheme continues to deliver spectacular results.
