After skipping OTAs, Christian McCaffrey reported for San Francisco 49ers mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.

It soon became apparent why.

The 49ers, per multiple reports, have signed McCaffrey to a two-year contract extension worth $19 million per year. ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio was the first to report the deal.

McCaffrey was due to enter unrestricted free agency in 2026 and earn $24.2 million over the next two years.

Instead, the extension ensures he will remain a member of the 49ers roster through the 2027 season, with his extension meaning he is now essentially tied to a four-year, $62.2 million contract worth $15.55 million annually.

McCaffrrey's new deal is reward for a remarkable 2023 season, for which he was named Offensive Player of the Year.

The former eighth overall pick of the Carolina Panthers won the rushing title with 1,459 yards and also led the league in yards from scrimmage (2,023). He was the only player to surpass 2,000 scrimmage yards in the 2023 season and also finished tied for the league lead in total touchdowns, his tally of 21 matched by former 49er running back Raheem Mostert.

Though he fell short of becoming the first running back to win the MVP award since Adrian Peterson in 2012, McCaffrey received his Offensive Player of the Year honor the week of Super Bowl 58, in which he racked up 160 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' overtime defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now, with his contract painting a more accurate reflection of his extraordinary value to the San Francisco offense, McCaffrey can focus on his preparations for a 2024 season that the 49ers hope will finally bring the ultimate glory after their agony in Las Vegas in February.
