Christian McCaffrey wasn't active for the San Francisco 49ers' regular-season finale.

He didn't need to be to have one of the defining achievements of his career confirmed.

McCaffrey sat out San Francisco's 21-20 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams in a meaningless Week 18 game that saw many starters on both sides sit out. The 49ers wrapped up the one seed in the NFC in Week 17, when McCaffrey sustained a mild calf injury.

Entering Week 18, McCaffrey was a massive 315 yards ahead of Rams running back Kyren Williams in the race for the rushing title. Williams also sat out Sunday's game, allowing McCaffrey to finish the season as the league's most prolific rusher without lifting a finger.

McCaffrey finished the season on 1,459 yards, 292 yards ahead of Derrick Henry, the Tennessee Titans back leapfrogging Williams into second place.

It is the first time McCaffrey has finished the season as the rushing champion. He is also the first 49er to achieve the feat since Hall of Famer Joe 'The Jet' Perry in 1954.

Per Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group, McCaffrey said of winning the title: “That’s awesome, but it’s on to the next step."

On top of his rushing title, McCaffrey ended the year as the only player to surpass 2,000 scrimmage yards, racking up 2,023, while his 21 touchdowns tied former 49er Raheem Mostert for the league lead.

More recognition will surely come his way at NFL Honors, with McCaffrey the favorite to win Offensive Player of the Year, but he'll hope to be focusing on a Super Bowl matchup by the time that is announced.
