The San Francisco 49ers are used to taking the lead in 2023, but they found a unique way to do so in their Monday Night Football game with the Baltimore Ravens.

Having seen Brock Purdy picked off in the endzone on their first offensive series, the 49ers' defense came up with the first points, but with a huge and accidental assist from an official.

After converting on third down, Lamar Jackson came under huge pressure from Fred Warner and Chase Young, the former coming free on a perfectly timed blitz, forcing Jackson to scurry back towards the endzone and to his left. As he tried to scramble out of danger, the official closest to him slipped to the ground, with Jackson then tripping over him.

Jackson heaved the ball out of the endzone as he fell but was flagged for intentional grounding, giving the 49ers a safety that put them up 2-0.

It was reward for a well-executed defensive call by the 49ers, but it came in a fashion nobody on either team could possibly have anticipated.

49ers kicker Jake Moody later made it 5-0 with a 45-yard field goal.
