The San Francisco 49ers have confirmed their complete preseason schedule ahead of the 2024 campaign, with their final exhibition one that will bring back painful memories for their players.
San Francisco begins its exhibition schedule on August 10 at the Tennessee Titans before then hosting its only home preseason game of the year, against the New Orleans Saints on August 18. Prior to that, the 49ers and Saints will take part in joint practices in Irvine, CA.
It is the finale, however, that will give the 49ers flashbacks to a day from which they are trying to move on.
The 49ers will end their preseason with a road game against the Las Vegas Raiders on August 23, meaning they must return to the scene of their Super Bowl 58 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in February.
San Francisco suffered an agonizing 25-22 defeat in overtime, and a return to Allegiant Stadium is probably the last thing anyone on the 49ers' roster wanted to confront in their final tuneup before they start their quest to get back to the Super Bowl.
Still, the argument could be made that a little bit of exposure therapy could be beneficial for the 49ers' collective psyche, with a return to the scene of their heartbreak potentially beneficial in providing an extra dose of motivation two weeks before the beginning of the new campaign.
It isn't the only time in 2024 that the 49ers will have to return to the scene of a Super Bowl defeat. They visit the Miami Dolphins in Week 16 in what will mark the Niners' first trip to Hard Rock Stadium since losing Super Bowl 54 to the Chiefs in 2019.
Very few players from that roster remain, however, and by that point in the season, the 49ers will hope to have firmly turned the page from memories of their latest Super Bowl loss to dreams of righting that wrong in Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans.
