The San Francisco 49ers' defense will get a major boost for their Week 14 clash with the Chicago Bears with the return of Talanoa Hufanga.

After activating the All-Pro safety from injured reserve on Saturday, Hufanga was left off the inactives list for the meeting with the Bears, meaning the former fifth-round pick is available to play in only his third game of the season.

Hufanga missed the first two games of the year owing to the ACL injury that ended his 2023 campaign in Week 11 and has spent most of the season on IR because of a wrist injury he sustained in the Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

But he will play against the Bears, likely with some kind of protection on his wrist, giving the 49ers a lot of flexibility at safety with Hufanga and Tashaun Gipson, the 49ers' starting pair in 2022 and 2023 prior to the former's injury, available to take snaps away from Ji'Ayir Brown and promising rookie Malik Mustapha.

On the other side of the ball, running back Israel Abanikanda, claimed off waivers in the wake of injuries to Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason, will not make his debut this week. He is inactive.

Patrick Taylor Jr. and Ke'Shawn Vaughn will be the backups to rookie Isaac Guerendo, who is the new lead back with both McCaffrey and Mason on IR.

Linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles also misses out because of a knee injury, while Joshua Dobbs is back to being the emergency third quarterback having been the second-stringer in the snow in Buffalo last week.
