The San Francisco 49ers will be without Christian McCaffrey for a second straight game.
McCaffrey, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year missed Friday's practice ahead of their Week 2 meeting with the Minnesota Vikings having been limited on Wednesday and Thursday.
The 2023 rushing champion was a surprise scratch for the 49ers' dominant Week 1 win over the New York Jets because of a calf problem and Achilles tendinitis.
It mattered not as Jordan Mason racked up 147 yards and a touchdown on the ground in his stead, and Mason will once again be asked to lead the rushing attack after head coach Kyle Shanahan ruled McCaffrey out in his final pre-game press conference.
McCaffrey had been adamant this week that he was preparing to play, however, his comments always seemed as if they would be best taken with a pinch of salt.
Now, with Shanahan describing Thursday's practice as "his worst day", the 49ers are considering injured reserve for McCaffrey, which would keep him out for at least four games.
That contradicts what Shanahan said earlier in the week when asked about the possibility of IR.
“No, I’ve never considered that," he said on Wednesday. "I was considering him to play last week, so definitely not thinking about four weeks off.”
All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga will likely have to wait at least one more week to return from the torn ACL he suffered last November. He is listed as doubtful, while linebacker Dee Winters (ankle) is questionable.
However, defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos is set to make his debut for the 49ers. He missed the win over the Jets with a knee sprain but is off the injury report along with guard Aaron Banks and wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
49ers-Vikings injury report

Meanwhile, the task facing the 49er defense got a little easier with the news that Vikings receiver Jordan Addison is out with an ankle injury. Addison scored two touchdowns against the Niners in the Vikings' win in this matchup last season.
The surprise late addition to the Vikings' injury report is guard Ed Ingram. Both Harrison Smith and Brian O'Neill are anticipated to play despite being listed as questionable.
Big question around 49ers gameplan grows more pressing following massive Vikings injury news
It might make the decision a little easier.
