A day after the trade for Chase Young, John Lynch said he felt a "lift" among the San Francisco 49ers when the news broke as they left for the bye week.
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel response to the trade was reflective of the general manager's assessment of the locker room mood.
Samuel made his weekly appearance on 'Up and Adams' on Thursday and was naturally asked about the Niners' deal with the Washington Commanders to acquire Young, the former second overall pick and 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year, and add him to a star-studded pass rush that has surprisingly struggled during a three-game losing streak.
San Francisco has just 18 sacks through the first eight games of the season despite Nick Bosa racking up 44 pressures, a tally that ranks third among all edge rushers, per Pro Football Focus.
Bosa has not got home on those pressures consistently and has received precious little support of late from his teammates up front, especially at the opposite defensive end spot.
Defensive ends not named Bosa have just 1.5 sacks since Week 1, when Drake Jackson had three, despite the 49ers already making a trade for Randy Gregory in an attempt to boost edge production.
Samuel, though, is confident adding Young to the mix will have the desired impact.
"It’s crazy, all the guys we got on the D-Line, just to add him, such an impact in his career that he’s had so far. For him to be a part of the team is amazing," Samuel said.
"To add him is just an extra little up that I think we need."
Speaking on KNBR on Wednesday, Lynch said:
"We’ve got a lot of players who are really good people and good pros and they’ve been hurting a little bit feeling like they’ve been letting our team, our community, our fans down. I did sense in the building that this kind of gave us a lift. You’re forgetful of that sometimes that a thing like this can lift a team and I felt that yesterday as we were taking off for the bye week but the important thing is to know that he’s not going to be the magic answer, we’ve all got to play better and make the plays at the given time for us to get back to our standard."
Making the plays at the given time has been a massive and unexpected issue for a defensive line brimming with premier talent. Young may not provide an immediate solution for all the 49ers' issues, but Samuel at least seems confident he can help them quickly address arguably the paramount concern on the defensive side of the ball.
Brock Purdy might have found his post-football career during the 49ers’ bye week
He could have a new job ready after retirement.
