We're a long way from knowing if the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions will even face each other should they both qualify for the postseason. If they do so, the matchup between Deebo Samuel and C.J. Gardner-Johnson will be a spicy one.
Samuel and Gardner-Johnson are in the midst of a surprise social media feud after the Lions defensive back called out the Niners' star wide receiver.
Having initially criticized Samuel after he was involved in a skirmish prior to the 49ers' 19-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Gardner-Johnson took more shots at the wideout during an Instagram Live video.
"Don't be friendly when you see me," Gardner-Johnson said. "Because I can guard you. You can't run routes, you're a running back."
Samuel had already seen the video, but was asked to respond to it as part of his weekly hit on 'Up and Adams'.
His reply was short, but will only add fuel to the apparent rivalry between the two players.
"He just sound like he's mad I got a little bag and a lot of money and no one knows who he is," said Samuel, who received a three-year, $71.55 million extension in 2022 after racking 1,770 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns in a remarkable 2021 campaign.
Samuel and Gardner-Johnson faced off in last year's NFC Championship Game when the 49ers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles after quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury on San Francisco's first offensive series.
The 49ers, Eagles and Lions are in a three-way tie atop the NFC at 5-1, and it's fair to say that the pre-game warm-ups and the in-game battle between Samuel and Gardner-Johnson will both be worth watching extremely closely should San Francisco and Detroit meet in a fascinating postseason encounter.
