Deebo Samuel stood by his trash talk, and then he backed it up emphatically.
The San Francisco 49ers' star wide receiver was vocal in the days after their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game last season, expressing his view that the Niners would have won had Brock Purdy not tore an elbow ligament on their first offensive series.
He also labeled cornerback James Bradberry "trash", a stance he refused to back down from when asked about it in the build-up to the 49ers' rematch with the Eagles this week.
While the shot at Bradberry may have been a tad harsh, Samuel's confidence in his team was overwhelmingly vindicated, and he was one of the dominant forces as San Francisco routed the Eagles 42-19 at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
Samuel exploded for 138 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns, his third putting the cherry on top of an outstanding performance with a 46-yard catch and run on a tunnel screen.
After that play, Samuel was quick to revel in the Eagles fans heading for the exits, waving goodbye as they left Lincoln Financial Field.
But at the podium, there was not much gloating from Samuel, who insisted his trash talk was not meant to be taken seriously.
“I was in that zone all week long," Samuel said in his post-game press conference.
"Talking trash is part of the game. Hopefully nobody took it to heart because it’s all fun and games."
For Samuel, it was his finest performance of the season, topping 100 yards from scrimmage for the first time since the Week 3 win over the New York Giants.
And it drew effusive plaudits from his teammates.
“He’s a special player, and I think his performance today shows that he’s a special player," said left tackle Trent Williams.
Added linebacker Fred Warner: "Deebo's one of the best football players I’ve ever seen. I think it’s safe to say his actions spoke louder than his words."
