The San Francisco 49ers have yet to agree to a long-term extension with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and, in the weeks leading up to the 2024 draft, there is likely to be more trade talk concerning their leading pass-catcher.
San Francisco has made clear its intention to sign Aiyuk to a renewal, the Niners adamant they have no intention of allowing their second-team All-Pro to go elsewhere. The 49ers also have a strong track record of re-signing their best players, coming to terms with their other star receiver, Deebo Samuel, after a prolonged and contentious negotiation in 2022.
There is a school of thought that the 49ers, even with a continually rising salary cap, won't be able to keep two high-priced receivers on the roster.
As such, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers have both been reported as having an interest in Aiyuk, and former NFL receiver DeSean Jackson would support a trade to the Steelers.
"I think it's going to be hard for him to stay in San Francisco, obviously, with him going on his fifth year," the three-time Pro Bowler and 2009 second-team All-Pro said of the 'Up and Adams' show.
"I don't think they'll be able to get a deal [done]. … Yeah, let that man be free and go get another deal somewhere else because, in your fifth year, you're really supposed to get that extension.
"I don't think he wants to go play a whole other season and wait to go get another bag or go secure his bag. So, in this perspective, I definitely see him trying to reach to get up out of there."
Talking about Pittsburgh as a potential destination, Jackson added: "If it is a fit, I mean, hey, Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Aiyuk over there. They just lost Diontae Johnson. They traded Diontae Johnson to Carolina, so they need another receiver. I definitely like that."
There could be an underlying reason why Jackson likes the thought of Aiyuk going elsewhere. Jackson was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and played eight seasons with a franchise that is one of the 49ers' biggest rivals in the NFC.
Though San Francisco could theoretically replace Aiyuk in the draft, the Niners losing an All-Pro wideout who at age 26 is entering his prime years would be a huge win for the Eagles and the rest of the NFC teams looking to topple the reigning conference champions in 2024.
Despite their firm stance, Aiyuk does not have untouchable status and the Niners, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, will listen to offers as they did for Samuel prior to the 2022 draft. But the 49ers will want a first-round pick in any Aiyuk trade package and, with the draft just over a month away, time is running out for any team that would like to make a deal.
It's no surprise that, given his own career history, Jackson would like to see Aiyuk leave the Niners. However, for now, the odds are against him getting his wish.
