The San Francisco 49ers know how to work the compensatory draft pick system, with perhaps the greatest proof of their expertise in that area coming on Monday.
As Over The Cap's Nick Korte detailed, the 49ers are set to receive a 2025 seventh-round pick after losing defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day in free agency. Joseph-Day signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Tennessee Titans.
On the surface, that is a pretty unspectacular development, until you consider how much football Joseph-Day actually played for the 49ers.
Joseph-Day signed with the 49ers in late December. He played 11 defensive snaps in the 49ers' Week 17 win over the Washington Commanders before playing 33 in a meaningless regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams. He then played very sparingly in the Niners' postseason run to Super Bowl 58.
Indeed, across his two regular-season games and three postseason appearances, Joseph-Day played only 63 defensive snaps. The average NFL team plays around 63 snaps on either side of the ball.
In other words, the 49ers are getting a seventh-round pick for a player who featured on barely a game's worth of snaps, with only 30 of those coming in meaningful action.
That is a testament to the Niners' ability to use the system to their advantage. A seventh-rounder is not much of a return, but the 49ers have famously found recent success with seventh-round picks, and they now have another opportunity to unearth a hidden gem. It also serves as potential ammunition in a midseason trade.
Joseph-Day may not have made much of an impact after his late-season arrival, but he could yet prove to have been a useful signing if the 49ers are able to turn that draft pick into a player of more tangible value.
